Turf Maintenance

 

The maintenance of your lawn depends on the variety of turf that has been installed. Below are some standard guides that will assist you in keeping your lawn looking great. If you have any specific enquires or are unsure about any of the below guidelines, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

When to water your lawn? (see video >)

  • The best time to water your lawn is early in the morning or during late afternoon when evaporation from the sun is at a minimum. Try not to water to late in the night as moisture related diseases can build up and harm you turf.
  • Water your lawn when it needs it. Like your plants around your house your turf will also require watering every now and again. A change in the lawns colour or its texture is a good indication that it’s thirsty.
  • Good deep water is far more valuable for your lawn then a shallow watering. A deep watering would be around 15mm – 20mm. To determine this, place a measuring cup under your sprinkler. Once it has filled to 15mm-20mm, move your sprinkler to another position.
  • Allow your lawn to dry out between waters. This will allow necessary oxygen a chance to reach the roots of the turf, promoting a healthier and more drought resistant lawn.
  • In dryer times when water restrictions are high your lawn may retreat into dormancy. If possible try to keep the soil moist. Once rainfall increases and / or restrictions are reduced, your lawn will bounce back quickly.

Good turf mowing practices (see video >)

Mowing your lawn helps your turf stay young and active. By giving it a close shave once every year you will promote new growth, reduce thatch, (dead underlying grass) and limit the amount of disease and moisture build up. By doing this your lawn will continue to perform and look good.

When mowing your lawn –

  • Keep your mower blades sharp
  • Avoid scalping* the grass (* exposing grass roots and / or soil)
  • Mow your grass when it is dry and healthy
  • Try not to remove any more then 1/3 of the turf leaf

Catching or mulching turf clippings?

This is completely up to you. Both options have positives and negatives. Mulching the grass will help retain moisture in the soil and as the clippings decompose will add nutrients to the earth. However, sometimes a moisture build up will promote diseases within your grass. Catching the clippings will lessen the threat of disease, whilst giving you the added benefit of having mulch for your garden beds.

When and how to fertilse your turf (see video >)

  • Fertilise your lawn at least 2 to 3 times a year. At the end of Summer and Autumn, and then at the beginning of spring is best for growth and turf colour. 
  • Use a slow release fertiliser. These will slowly release nutrients into your turf and won't burn the leaves.
  • Apply fertiliser only if it needs it. It's not necessary to put it on if the turf is growing vigorously.
